New Zealand Flag

$13.62

The official flag of New Zealand is a defaced Blue Ensign: a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, and four red stars with white borders to the right. The stars represent the asterism within the constellation of Crux, known as the Southern Cross.

The flag was adopted on 16 November 1902 and first flown on a warship at sea on 19 November 1903. New Zealand's colonial flags had previously represented imperial ties to Britain, firstly as part of the Colony of New South Wales (1817–1840), then as part of the Colony of New Zealand (1841–1907). The current flag was designed after a competition held following demand from colonists for a "flag of distinction."

The flag was first used on ships in 1834 and was first raised in Auckland in May 1834. The New Zealand flag is one of the oldest flags in the world still in use today. It has been used continuously since 1834, although it did not become officially recognized as New Zealand’s national flag until 1966.

New Zealand is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori named New Zealand Aotearoa, commonly translated as "land of the long white cloud"
