A little history

Massachusetts place in American history dates well before its role in the beginnings of the Revolutionary War... The Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and establish a treaty with the local Native American tribe in the area... It is that piece of history that plays a major role in the state's flag and the controversy concerning it.

The flag, originally adopted in 1901 with two sides, features the State Coat of Arms centered on a white field... The Coat of Arms, which is featured on the State Seal and flag, displays a blue shield with a Algonquin Native American and a five-pointed white star... Above the shield is a disembodied arm holding a sword... Surrounding the shield is a blue ribbon with the State Motto: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" or translates as "By the sword we seek peace, but peace under liberty."

Until 1971, a green pine tree was on the observe side of the flag.

Controversy over the symbolism has gained traction in recent years... The Native American figure is identified as Wampanoag leader Ousamequin or Massasoit. Massasoit signed the treaty with the English in 1621... The arm holding the sword is Myles Standish, the Plymouth colony leader who brokered peace with Massasoit.

Some believe a more literal translation of the Latin motto is "She seeks with the sword a quiet peace under liberty."... With that translation, the meaning of the sword over the head of the Native American can take on new meaning, especially with Standish's killing of Pecksuot in 1623... That has led some to cast the sword imagery as a sword of native oppression.
