A little history

When thinking of the design of its State Flag, it doesn't really make one think of the tropical paradise much at all. Yet, it is a symbol of past history and a compromise to placate two powers.

When the British presented King Kamehameha I with the Union Flag in the 18th Century, the king proudly flew the Flag of the United Kingdom at his palace... During the War of 1812, however, an American flag was raised in order to play to American favor.

When British officers took exception, Kamehameha came up with a compromise that has stood for Hawaii's flag to this day... In 1816, Kamehameha commissioned the design of the flag to the Royal Navy officer, who placed the Union Jack in the top left corner and eight red and white horizontal stripes of the U.S. Flag across the field.

The eight stripes -- which legend says were initially supposed to be red, white and blue -- represent the eight major islands of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Islands remained sovereign until U.S. and British laid claim to again near the mid-19th century... On July 31, 1843, independence and the flag were re-granted and King Kamehameha III spoke what would become the State Motto: "Ua mau ke ea ka aina i ka pono" (The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness). It was then called Ka Hae Hawaii from 1845 on. July 31 was dedicated Hawaiian Flag Day and the flag easily transferred over to State Flag when it achieved statehood in 1959.
