Legend has it...

The history of the Danish flag has an almost mythical quality to it that is passed down from generation to generation and dates back eight centuries.

In 1219, Danish King Valdemar the Victorious led his army on a crusade alongside those of German tribes against Estonian pagans. During the Battle of Lyndanisse on June 15, 1219, the Danes faced greater numbers and were in peril until a flag fell from the sky and turned the tide into the Danes’ favor.

A popular monastic account from a 15th-century text says that Bishop Anders Sunesen raised his arms to plead to God for help. A red lambskin banner with the white cross on it came down from the clouds. Valdemar then grabbed and waved it to inspire the soldiers to victory.

The Crusader Flag

During Catholic Crusades from the 11th century to the 13th century, Europeans often fought under a banner that consisted of a white Scandinavian cross on a red field. This flag could be seen with a swallow tail.

This is the flag that “fell from the sky” and is known as the Dannebrog (Strength of the Danes).

The National flag

Denmark adopted the flag and made it the official national banner in the 14th century, making it one of the world’s oldest national emblems.

June 15 is now considered a national holiday -- Valdemar’s Day -- in Denmark.

Many nations consider their national banner a state flag, but Denmark rather considers it a flag for the people, who use it for all types of celebrations -- Christmas, birthdays, weddings, etc., -- and not as much for patriotism.
