The Brazil flag is a green field with a large yellow diamond in the center surrounding a blue celestial globe bearing 27 white five-pointed stars and the motto Ordem E Progresson -- Order and Progress. Inspired by the banner of the 19th century Empire of Brazil -- which combined the color of Portuguese Price Dom Pedro’ family (green) and his wife’s Habsburg family color of yellow. The green came to represent the forests and the yellow its mineral wealth. The blue circle and stars reflect the sky over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of Nov. 15, 1889, the date the Republic of Brazil was declared. The number of stars has grown from 21 to 27 to indicate the number of states and the Federal District.
