The history

Arkansas joined the Union in 1836, but didn’t fly official colors as its state banner until 1913… As a member of the Confederate States of America, it flew several different flags during the Civil War, but none came to prominence.

In 1910, however, the U.S. Navy began building the U.S.S. Arkansas battleship and a movement began to fly a proper flag on the ship… In 1912, the Pine Bluff Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) “resolved to present a ‘stand of colors’ (a national flag, a naval battalion ensign, and a state flag) to the new ship.”

Secretary of State Earle W. Hodges supported the move and asked for submissions to be made to him and he started a committee… Sixty-five designs were submitted and the winning red, white and blue design came from Miss Willie Hocker of Wabbaseka, who was a member of the Pine Bluff chapter… It was officially adopted by the state’s General Assembly on February 26, 1913.

The red, white and blue colors were chosen to represent the colors of the United States flag… There is a large diamond centered on a red field… The border of the diamond is blue and contains 25 white stars to signify Arkansas as the twenty-fifth state… The word Arkansas is written in blue on the white field inside the diamond… Below the word are three blue stars to signify the nations ruling over the region -- Spain, France and the United States, France having sold the territory to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

The blue star above the word “Arkansas” represent the state’s place in the Confederacy… A bill was introduced in 2019 to change that meaning to the original Native American tribes of the region, but it failed in committee.
