Strawberries, cream and flags: Cheer on your country's best at Wimbledon

Strawberries, cream and flags: Cheer on your country's best at Wimbledon

By Luke Porco

Beginning July 1, tennis fans will be glued to their TVs, laptops, and phones, as the Wimbledon Championships begin from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London. This year’s tournament will include some of the world’s best tennis players from all over the world. Some of those players include defending Men’s Singles champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia, and defending Women’s Singles champion Angelique Kerber from Germany. Other notable players that will be in the tournament include Rafael Nadal from Spain and Roger Federer, from Switzerland, and Naomi Osaka from Japan, and Ashleigh Barty from Australia. The diverse amount of international players in the tournament is a smart reason to buy flags from the country of your favorite player, or your own country.

This year’s Wimbledon will have some new rule changes, such as a tie break that will be implemented once there is a 12-12 score in the final set. In the event of a 12-12 tie, the tie break would be played until a player reaches seven points with a two or more point lead. This is due to last year’s men’s semifinal between Kevin Anderson and John Isner, which had a final set last nearly three hours.

The tournament will begin with 128 players in both the men’s and women’s singles, then continues for the following two weeks until the ladies’ singles final on July 13 followed by the men’s final on July 14. During the tournament, flags can be bought for some of the countries that have players representing them, such as Germany, Japan, United States, Italy, Canada, France, Argentina, Belgium, Australia, England, China, and Brazil. If we do not have your country, please let us know and we will make sure we have it available.
